Tips from the Inside: Timeless Guitar Tone… Immediately | SOSstudio

Journey of a Studio Collaborator

Kemper

Like many recording guitarists these days, I don’t have the convenience of going to a big studio to drag out my amps and turning up to ear bleeding levels (nor would I want my ears to bleed) and I also have the disadvantage of living in an apartment. So what’s the best way to find the tones I need for incoming projects and not get kicked out of my apartment?

As some of you may have heard, there are many guitar processors on the market. Line 6 HD pro, Digitech GSP1101, and the AxeFX (which is amazing from what I’ve heard) are just a few. The one that grabbed my attention the most was the Kemper Profiling amp. An amazing box that captures the “soul” of an amp and puts it at your fingertips, instantly, at any volume.  While it’s easy to get lost in a sea of profiles and the search for the the right ones, I quickly realized that this was the ultimate tool for me and SOS.

Within minutes of receiving tracks for an upcoming project I can decide which amp I want and if I want any effects… Let me give an example:

“hmmmm ok, so its a blues song this week…
ooo let’s try that Marshall Bluesbreaker profile I was playing with the other day…mmm not bad,
how about a driven Fender Deluxe…oh that’s nice…maybe a little delay…perfect!!!!”

No dragging out my amps, setting up the mics, going back and readjusting…repeat….nope that doesn’t work, another amp….another mic…hours of my life gone. Now all that time is spent creating and finding the right sounds for the project.

Now I’m not saying having an amp collection isn’t one of the coolest things in the world…cause it is!!! But when you have deadlines and projects flying at you it’s really nice to know that I can dial in the sounds I need, hit a couple buttons, save it in case I need it for re-tracking or adding more parts later on (hint hint, always save your settings) and I’m off and on my way to recording in no time. A little pricey but when you think about how much it would cost for you to buy just 1 or 2 really top notch amps it pays for itself instantly, in my opinion.

Now if you have some favorite amps, you know how to mic them, and love the sound, you can capture and save their profiles in your Kemper. That way they’re always available to you, even if the amp isn’t.

Below are just a couple examples of the versatility and tones you can get with the Kemper.

Cheers
